USPLN Lightning Data

Overview
The USPLN provides complete lightning cloud-ground stroke detection data covering the contiguous 48 United States and geographic locations within 200-300 miles of the U.S. border. Data is delivered in real-time (<1 minute latency) or near real-time (1+ minute latency) via the Internet in a number of different formats and methods to accommodate the needs of all customers and users. Lightning data files includes the following content:
  • Date / Time (UTC, to milliseconds)
  • Latitude and longitude (to seven decimal places)
  • Peak amplitude of event with signal polarity
  • Error ellipse major/minor axes (km); orientation of major axis
Example data:

In addition to cloud-ground stroke data, cloud flashes (cloud-to-cloud/intra-cloud/cloud-to-air) are also reported. These events include the parameters listed above, and are identified by a 0.0 value for Peak Amplitude.
Coverage Area
The USPLN covers the contiguous 48 states, as well as southern Canada, the Gulf of Mexico, northern Mexico and parts of the Caribbean. Data can be delivered for areas as small as 25 miles in radius up to full nationwide coverage. The North American Precision Lightning Network provides highly accurate lightning data for most of North America. The Global Lightning Network provides lightning coverage outside of North America.
Licensing
USPLN data is available in a number of flexible licensing arrangements, including single-user, additional user, unlimited users at a site or workstation, or enterprise-wide usage. The ability to archive USPLN data is considered a premium licensing service.
Since the primary delivery mechanism for USPLN data is the Internet, very little is required in terms of set up, making the information readily and easily accessible. In addition, the USPLN data comes in a variety of formats and latencies, suitable for every application and usage. For more information about special coverages and unique formatting requirements, email USPLN Sales. We will develop data sets to specification.
